In my efforts of increasing my focus toward growth this year I have decided to avail myself of the suggestion of a great book, One Word That Will Change Your Life!
I heard about this book on Moody Radio last week. The book points out how most New Year resolutions are abandoned a couple of months into the year. It suggested, instead to pick one word to focus on. A word that, if implemented to your life, would change your life the most!
Have you set New Year resolutions already? If you had to pick One Word to change your life this year, what word would you pick? Some friends on FB have picked: Worship, Bliss, Joy, Trust, Determination, Growth, Purpose. What word would you pick?
I have been thinking about what word to pick to concentrate on for the year. What one-word theme do I want to set for 2013?
The first word I thought of was DISCIPLINE. The Lord put this word in my heart 2-3 years ago as something I need to develop for Him to take me to the next level. I have not concentrated on it like I would like and it still remains on the top of my list as a trait I need to further develop!
After further consideration, my final choice for a one-word theme for 2013 is SERVANTHOOD. I really need and want the Lord to work in my heart! Being a servant is something I have not done a good job at in the past and growing in this area would make me most efficient in God’s Kingdom!
I am still thinking about how to develop the attitude of a servant and what this journey will look like for the year. All I know is that in all areas of my life, starting with my marriage, all of my efforts will be in putting the needs of others in front of my own.
I want to be:
- a better listener
- seek first to understand
- look at the world through the eyes of the other person
- put my energy to helping other people “shine”
- getting out of my comfort zone, and constantly looking for ways to make someone else’s life easier
- Look to serve in the background, seeking no acknowledgement or appreciation
I want to have the attitude that Jesus displayed when He washed the disciples feet. I want to take this year to hide myself behind Jesus’ cross and have an unstoppable passion to love others with agape love.
I will spend the year learning more about the sacrificial love Jesus displayed to me 2000 years ago and the unconditional love He shows me every day. My knowledge and appreciation of this truth will leave me no choice but to love and serve those around me.
What would you pick as YOUR “One Word” for 2013?

What a lovely post! If more people chose your word and tried to live by it, the world would be a different place. I admire your goals. The purpose of life really boils down to that — loving and serving God and others. Jesus is our perfect example! Thanks for sharing this.
I LOVE this. I didnt know this book existed, but for a few years now I have picked a “theme” word for the year…. and as I sit here I realize I did not do it this year. I love the idea of “discipline” – that may need to be mine. “Completion” would be a good one for me too… hmmm…
I love your theme of servanthood. What a wonderful goal! My word for the year is “joy.” Excited to be following you from the Crew.
I love your word, too! It’s a great way to focus our mind on all the things we are blessed with vs. the things that we don’t have or aren’t going well. Thanks for stopping by and following!
