I always start my days off with good intentions…
During the school year our days usually start out with a plan, a list of things to do, lessons to complete and books to read. Then life happens, kids happen 😦
Today was one of those days. My expectations were a lot higher than what we actually accomplished. Even in days like today, when I feel like I did not accomplish everything I wanted to, I was still so busy and got so much done. There are always books and even a whole lesson we didn’t get to, or a question that still needs to be followed up on.
I have embraced the fact that on a normal day I usually will not get to everything. I have tried a number of things to help with this. I try to complete the most important things first. We try to our devotion done earlier in the morning, then Math, Reading and Writing (not necessarily in that order).
Lately this is not working so great because sometimes we miss Science, Geography, History, etc. I especially don’t like the fact that one of the things we don’t get to is reading out loud. This leaves such a vital part out of our learning experience. I put a lot of thought into the books we get to read out loud and they bring to life a lot of what we learn in our academics.
It is only September and I am trying to start everything up gradually. My natural inclination is more ambitious but I have learned to pace myself. I want to get to the point where we get to everything without having to keep the boys engaged all day long! I know it’s possible. We use my Father’s World and it’s designed to take 4 hours a day!
When I look at MFW’s sample schedule it suggests a limited amount of time for each subject. I think my mistake is that we don’t move on to the next subject until we complete the assignment at hand. This is great, but then by the time we get to the 4th subject it’s 3 hours later and the boys and I are tired and hungry.
Tomorrow I will try limiting the time for the subjects and see how that changes things. We have exciting activities, experiments and books I have planned for the week. My goal is to get to them by 10am…let’s see how it goes.
Btw…one thing we are accomplishing on our task list is potty training!! It has been a couple of days with now diaper and no accident!! This makes up for a lot of our other shortcomings 🙂
