As we continue learning the geography of the United States we are getting ready to experience the Underground Railroad as runaway slaves! My husband and I will be going with our older boys to an educational program in the area. It will be a 2-mile hike, and we will encounter actors along the way that will bring the experience to life. At the end of our journey we will enter a train, where we will discover our fate!
I have been trying to do this program for the last couple of years, but thought the boys were not old enough. The program is in November, every year, and it fits right in with some of the discussions we have been having the last couple of weeks.
We started reading the Young Folks’ Edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin this week. I read the original version this past summer and LOVED IT! My boys saw as I was unable to put the book down and read the whole thing in less than a week. My excitement and interest was contagious, but I was not really trying to read a 500 page book to a 9 and an 8 year old. The Young Folks’ version is exactly what we need. It is more than a picture book would give us, but not too much that would make it boring for them. They have already asked great questions, and the Underground Railroad Experience should help them understand much more!
If you live in North East Ohio and want to get more information about the Underground Railroad Experience, visit Cuyahoga Valley’s Scenic Railroad’s site.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin’s Young Folks’ Edition is online, and its FREE!! It’s a great read for the whole family!
