I have always wanted to journal consistently but have never been great at sticking to it. Last week I heard one of my favorite podcast thus far. In it Michael Hyatt explains the 7 Benefits of Keeping a Journal. Since I heard this I have been writing in my journal consistently.
For part of my journal writing I use The Five Minute Journal. It has great reviews and it has turned into one of the most powerful 5 minutes of my day!
I HAD to invite my boys to join me on this new habit I am developing. As I slowly help the boys improve their morning and evening routine, this is the first habit I wanted to have them implement into their day.
Today I talked to them of the 3 things I love about this journal, though this can also be done on regular pen and paper :).
Identifying 3 things they are thankful for.
We talked about how God’s Word says, in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything give thank”. One of the most important things we can do to keep a godly perspective and keep a joyful attitude in spite of our circumstances is to be thankful. Thankful in everything, always. What a great way to start each day!
Listing 3 things that would make the day awesome.
Benjamin Franklin once said that “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Putting our plans and important tasks on paper is one of the most important things leaders do. I love how this journal makes it so easy to incorporate this important habit in my boys’ lives now!
Finally, the journal has you write down one affirmation for the day.
Affirmations are important! I love the words from Earl Nightingale when he said “Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.” We are constantly planting things in our subconscious or letting other do it for us. What a great way to implement this powerful activity in my children’s lives. Words are important. Especially the one’s we say to ourselves. I want my boys to learn to be conscious of this.
In my mission of raising influential leaders in my children, habits are important! This 5 minute ritual is my boys’ life is PACKED with powerful habits that they will prayerfully carry into their adult lives.
